BENJAMIN SCHAUER FOR IOWA HOUSE
Meet Benjamin
Benjamin is a proud Iowa transplant and loves his adopted state! Born in Oklahoma, he moved to the small town of North English (Iowa County) in 2007. After graduating from English Valley High School in 2011, he attended the University of Iowa where he received a degree in Vocal Performance and a K-12 Music Education endorsement.
Benjamin took his first job in the fall of 2016 with the Boyer Valley Community School District in Dunlap (Harrison County) as the 6-12 Band and Vocal Music Director. During his time at BV, he has accumulated many hats, most recently among them the 6-12 Director of Education (which he holds in addition to his teaching duties as the 5-12 Band Director).
A lifelong learner, Benjamin earned his Masters Degree in Educational Leadership in 2022 from Drake University and returned again in the fall of 2023 to pursue his PhD in Education (an act done not only to fulfill his desire for knowledge but also to honor the educational achievements of his late mother, Dr. Carol Fischer, who passed of COVID-19 in February 2022).
Outside of his job and educational pursuits, Benjamin is an active participant in his community. He currently serves as a City Councilman for the City of Dunlap, sits on the Dunlap Community Development Corporation board, is the current president of the Boyer Valley Education Association, serves as the Chair of the Harrison County Democrats, and sits on the board for the Harlan Community Theatre in Harlan, IA (Shelby County).
Benjamin is also an active church musician and assists several local churches in the area as a freelance artist. In addition to this, he is currently on staff at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison, IA (Crawford County) as their choir accompanist and regularly serves on the worship and drama teams of his home church, Grace Evangelical Free Church, also of Denison.

Benjamin was inspired to run for office because rural Iowans in House District 15 need a choice on the ballot this November. For too long this district has been dominated by one party’s ideas and policies, and the stranglehold has to be broken. The people deserve a choice, and Benjamin plans to offer a viable alternative to our current reality.
